Groundcovers 101: A Basic Guide

Groundcovers are low-lying plants that have a habit of creeping and spreading. This characteristic makes them useful in covering sections of ground, thus the term “groundcovers.”

These plants can serve different functions, and they require minimal upkeep. Whether you need them for aesthetic appeal or practical purposes, groundcovers can prove to be a great addition to your outdoor living spaces.

Learn more about groundcovers as reputable landscaping specialist Backyard Reflections shares more information about these plants below.

Uses for Groundcovers

In general, groundcover plants can be used to enhance the appearance of a landscape by introducing new colors or textures. In other cases, groundcovers are added onto steep slopes that aren’t easy to mow or areas where turf grass doesn’t thrive.

The other functions of groundcovers are as follows:

  • To cover extremely hot, dry areas (arid-climate plants like ice plants or sedum are great for these locations)
  • To cover high-traffic areas that don’t do well when planted with grass (baby’s tears or creeping thyme are recommended for these areas)
  • To block out weeds (creeping phlox and dragon’s blood sedum are ideal for this purpose)

It may be worth noting that the initial cost of adding groundcovers on large areas is usually greater than sowing grass seed. However, groundcover plants can save you money in the long run as they eliminate the expenses needed for watering, feeding, and lawnmower fuel and upkeep.

Groundcover Vs. Cover Crop

Make sure you don’t confuse groundcovers with cover crops. Some of these plants may overlap, but groundcovers and cover crops are completely different groups of plants.

Groundcovers are ornamental perennial plants that are used to cover an expanse of ground for several years. Meanwhile, a cover crop is mainly used as a sort of living mulch, typically in vegetable gardening. It is meant to grow for a season. Then, it is tilled so that it can add nutrients to the soil.
