Do’s and Don’ts of Landscaping Around Mature Trees

Landscaping around trees is not exactly an easy task. Lush and well-developed canopies of mature trees bring generous shade to residential spaces; however, the ground around their trunks can make a barren impression in an otherwise vibrant landscape design. This is due to large roots that soak up all the water and big branches that block sunlight from reaching the soil. Luckily, lighting design landscape experts from Backyard Reflections share how you can transform these desolate areas into a colorful and spirited space with some helpful do’s and don’ts.

DO Maintain the Current Soil Level

If you think that the best way to resolve this landscaping problem is to simply create a raised border around a tree so you can fill it in with fresh soil, then you’re mistaken. The additional chunk of soil around the trunk can actually cause the bark to rot. If this happens, the tree will be left vulnerable to disease and insect infestation. Instead, you can place the planting bed one to two feet away from the trunk.

DON’T Add Soil Over Turf

Veteran outdoor living contractors will attest that digging out existing lawn trees before adding fresh soil is the best technique to make a healthy garden bed. Many homeowners think that grass will simply decompose under the soil, but it actually creates a barrier that prevents water and oxygen from reaching the tree roots. These nutrients are necessary for the roots to absorb so the tree can fully thrive.

DO Carefully Pick Plants to Go Under the Tree

Plants such as magnolias and maples allow dappled sunlight to pass through their branches whereas most evergreen shrubs only permit the minimal amount of sun rays near their trunks. Deep-shade plants are your best choices if you want to design and breathe organic life near mature trees.

DON’T Damage Tree Roots When Planting

White oak and hickory are examples of trees that send down deep roots. Accidentally cutting into these roots with a landscaping tool can seriously damage a tree. In order to avoid this, use a hand trowel and carefully scoop out soil when you need to fit new plants into an area.
