Groundcovers are well-loved for the various functions they serve. From covering bare spots to adding colors into a landscape, these plants are quite versatile and can enhance gardens that need a little help.
In today’s post, lighting design landscape specialist Backyard Reflections shares five of the best groundcovers for Minnesota landscapes.
Wild Ginger
This plant features heart-shaped leaves that cluster together and resemble a floating carpet of green. However, a closer look will show you a tiny flower near the ground during spring. Experts usually recommend planting wild ginger along with spring ephemerals like trillium and pasque flower. The wild ginger will fill in the landscape after the ephemerals have faded.
Moss Phlox
It blooms in early springtime, covering the ground with flowers in shades of pink, purple, or white. Moss phlox requires full sun, and it can grow up to 3-6 inches. Try placing it at the front of your garden and you’ll see it spread for 1-2 feet.
Sweet Woodruff
If you enlist professional landscape services, experts might offer to put sweet woodruff on your garden. This plant boasts of bright green foliage and dainty white flowers, which could lighten up a shady spot. Much like all groundcovers, sweet woodruff spreads, but it’s easy to pull by hand in case it reaches areas where you don’t want it to grow.
Daylily
This type of groundcover has trumpet-shaped blooms that can provide fragrance and amazing color contrast to any garden. Daylilies are also effective at crowding out weeds and attracting butterflies. They thrive under full sun or partial shade.
Thyme
Thyme is a large group of herbs and ornamentals. The most popular thymes for Minnesota are Elfin creeping thyme, “Doone Valley” creeping thyme and wooly thyme. Many thymes can be placed around paths and stone walkways since they can stand some light foot traffic.
